Hagar and her son Ishmael of about 17 years old wandered into the wilderness of Beer- Sheba after being sent away, Genesis 21:11-14. They had just a skin of water and bread with them. The water and bread soon finished and they were left with nothing except the clothes they wore, the empty skin for water and the sandals on their feet.
They were in the wilderness, a dry and weary land, a land with no spring of water, a land without big trees that could give shade from the scotching heat of the sun, a land full of wild animals. A land not inhabited by humans. They were alone in the open with no other clothes to change into, no food, no money, no water, no other human being to look to for help. They couldn’t go back to where they came from probably they had being warned never to come back. They couldn’t go further because doing so meant moving deeper into the wilderness, and into more danger. After going without food and water for days Ishmael was dying from hunger and thirst. He had become so famished, dehydrated and weak that the mother had to prop him up under one of the shrubs. With a heavy and broken heart she walked few yards away from him thinking the end had come for her beloved son Ishmael for she had said “let me not see the death of the child.” With a trembling heart full of fear for the life of her son she sat down and she wept! Genesis 14-16. What a terrible and hopeless situation!
Hagar had thought all was over for her and her son, she had resigned to fate. She had given up! However, it was not yet over! The God of heaven that sees everything, the One that hears even the faintest sigh of the heart, the help of the helpless, and hope of the hopeless intervened. Did the Scripture not say He would be gracious as soon as he hears your cry? Isaiah 30: 19. God saw their plight right there in the wilderness. He saw their tears and He heard their cries. He sent an angel to give her succor and assurance of His faithfulness to fulfill all He had promised her before now in Genesis 16: 11-12. Jehovah Jireh, the great provider opened her eyes and she saw a well of water she never saw before. He had miraculously provided a well of water just like the ram He miraculously provided for Abraham in place of Isaac. God had turned her crying to joy! So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. That water was full of all that nourishes the body, soul and spirit. God was with the boy right there in the wilderness as he grew up. God did not allow any harm to befall them despite dwelling in the wilderness full of dangers because He was their habitation day and night. God was with Him right there in the wilderness and helped him fulfill all his life’s destiny, Genesis 21: 17- 21.
Some times in life, we find ourselves in certain unpalatable situation we never ever envisage we could be. I am talking of situations that totally destabilizes us leaving us confused and not knowing what to do. Situation that totally demobilizes us where though the present place we are is not conducive yet leaving the place is not possible; moving forward is impossible, moving backward is risky and dangerous and moving to the right or to the left side is not easy too. I am talking of situations where you are left all alone with nothing, no shelter, no cloths, no food, no one to look to for any help and assistance. I am talking about situations when nothing seems to work and everyone and everything is against you. At such times the heart becomes weak, weary and discouraged and the temptation to give up is high. Yet, you must not give up, for your breakthrough is nearer you than you can imagine. God the ever present help in the time of trouble is nearby. Cry unto Him for help and He will answer you, Psalm 50:15: Psalm 34:15. Don’t lose hope for just when you think it is over, God sends you a miracle that will take care of all areas of your needs in a way you can never figure out. He is the miracle working God, the Alpha and Omega. God will take care of you, continue clinging onto Him.
My dear reader, you may be somewhere downcast and crying your eyes out thinking God does not see or know of the difficult circumstance and sufferings you are in. The great I AM that I AM who rules and reigns in the affairs of men sees and knows all that you are passing through and how you are hurting. He sees and knows where you are, knows your name, knows what is inside of you, He knows your heart and everything there is to know about you, Psalm 44:21; 69:19; 139: 1-16. This truth Hagar discovered when the great God of Abraham appeared to her at the spring of water some years back when in rebellion had ran away from her mistress Sarah, Genesis 16:7-14.
He will help you, and everything will work out fine in the end. Get up, refrain thy voice from weeping and thy eyes from tears, Jeremiah 31: 16. Listen, God will take care of you, He is the God who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Ephesians 3:20.
Your circumstances may look as if you there is no way out and that you are about to be consumed. Know that He will not allow you to be consumed. He is the raging storm calmer and the One that turned furnace of fire to cooling furnace for the three Hebrew boys. Jesus the Way and the way maker will make a way for you. Don’t doubt G0d’s love for you; hold on to Him in faith. He is able to help and deliver you as He did for Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego. Your case will receive His divine attention and intervention. You may not be able to figure out how He would do it, but He will. He will make a way out of all your problems for you.
You may be somewhere where help is humanly difficult or impossible, not so with God. He is the God of the whole nations of the earth, God of all flesh and nothing is impossible for him to do Jeremiah 32:17, 27. He is able to do what man cannot do. With God nothing is impossible. It does not matter where you are, He will locate you because He is everywhere present and His eyes are on those whose hope is in Him Psalm 33:18-19. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, Psalm 27:14
You may be in a situation where it seems God had forsaken or forgotten all about you. He has not. He can never forget about you because you were graven in the palms of His hands Isaiah 49: 15-16. Don’t give up, keep yourself busy and wait on Him. The great God of Abraham, the promise and covenant keeper is still the same God in our present time. Hold unto His promises even when it seems there is a delay.
Are you unmarried yet and pregnant with a child as a result of your involvement in premarital sex and you are thinking of ending your life because of the shame and stigmatization? Please don’t give up on yourself and on life. God knows everything about your plight. Although premarital sex is a sin yet God is a merciful, whose anger is just for a moment. He will forgive you the moment you confess your sins and ask for his forgiveness. If everyone else had given up on you, God will not give up on you. He is the God of another chance. God will help you and take care of you and the unborn child. Seek His face for help and He will help you, Lamentation 3: 25-26. He will turn your shame to testimony, Isaiah 61:7.
Are you a single mother, denied, rejected and abandoned by the father of your child/children who before now had sweet talked you and promised you heaven and earth to have his child? As a result of being abandoned you have been struggling all alone to bring up your child/children, and you are now having your own version of life’s wilderness experience of loneliness, helplessness, total dryness and emptiness. Just keep on persevering and seeking God’s face. God the defender of the defenseless will defend you and help you, psalm 35: 10. God is still the God of heaven who specializes in doing the miraculous. He who brings water from hard molten rock and rains manna from heaven for the Israelites will provide and protect you. Please don’t give up on life.
Are you a boy or girl suffering because you have been thrown out of your father’s house and denied access to your father because your mother was not legally married to your father? Or are you a child abandoned by your mother at birth? Don’t be dismayed, God knows all about you and all your struggles and sufferings. God loves and cares about you. You are not without a father or mother. The Psalmist says “When my father and mother forsake me, God will receive me” (Psalm 27:10). God is interested in you. You are His child because He made you in His own image and likeness. Don’t lose hope. The God of Abraham who helped Ishmael to fulfill destiny even while in the wilderness is still the same today. You are His Child, He is with you and He will help you. No power can thwart His plans and purpose for your life, Job 42:2. As He was with Joseph and helped him fulfill his destiny despite all the difficulties he went through, He will be with you and make all your efforts successful in Jesus name.
If you are reading this write up and you have not given your life to Jesus Christ, please do so now. Life can be very dry when Jesus is not in it. Jesus is the bread of live, John 6:35 and Living water, John 4:14, 7:37. He invites you to come and freely get nourishment for your soul saying;
“Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? And your labour for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thought: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon” (Isaiah 55:1-3, 6, 7).
Come to Him now by taking these steps;
1) Admit you are a sinner. Romans 3:23; 6:23.
2) Repent of all sins. Acts 3:19. 1 John 1:9
3) Believe that God loves you and that Jesus His only Son died for you. Romans 5:8, Acts 10;40 & 43
4) Invite Jesus into your heart. Revelations 3:20
GOD LOVES YOU, AND SO DO I.
